Clarifying and Updating Our Upgrade Policy

We’re updating our upgrade eligibility to ensure it reflects both our values and your expectations. We heard your feedback, especially from those of you with more than 12 months remaining on your membership.

Starting today:

  • If you have more than 12 months remaining, you’re eligible for a free upgrade to WHOOP 5.0 on Peak. This will be automatically applied when you go to check out.
  • If you’ve already upgraded to WHOOP 5.0 on Peak and paid a one-time upgrade fee despite having more than 12 months remaining, we’ll refund that fee. You’ll be receiving a refund – stay tuned for an email.

How Upgrades Work

Your WHOOP membership has always included access to the latest hardware — at no additional cost — based on how much time you have remaining in your membership.

When we launched WHOOP 4.0 in 2021, most members were on monthly or 6-month plans. At the time, members with 6 months or more remaining were eligible for a free upgrade to WHOOP 4.0. Annual memberships were more expensive than they are today.

Today, we only offer 12- and 24-month memberships, and, as a result, the free upgrade eligibility to WHOOP 5.0 on One or Peak requires 12 months or more of membership remaining. If you have less than 12 months remaining, you can extend your membership to receive an upgrade at no additional cost – or pay a one-time upgrade fee to get the latest hardware without extending your membership. You can also choose to renew your subscription when it is up, and you’ll be eligible to upgrade to WHOOP 5.0 at that time for free.

Also, if you purchased or renewed a WHOOP 4.0 membership in the last 30 days before May 8, your upgrade fee will be automatically waived at checkout.

More Membership Choices

As you may have seen, this week we also introduced an additional and entirely new membership, WHOOP Life. This is our most premium option yet, offering medical-grade capabilities, only possible with our most advanced hardware, WHOOP MG.

You can upgrade to WHOOP Life in two ways:

  • Upgrade to a 12-month WHOOP Life membership and receive WHOOP MG at no extra cost
  • Or, pay a one-time upgrade fee to receive WHOOP MG and switch to WHOOP Life without extending your membership

You can see details for membership pricing in your region here and more on upgrade fees in your region here.

Correction on Our Blog

We also want to acknowledge that a previous blog article incorrectly stated that anyone who had been a member for just 6 months would receive a free upgrade. This was never our policy and should never have been posted. As noted above, our policy for upgrades from WHOOP 3.0 to WHOOP 4.0 was that members with 6 months or more remaining on their membership were eligible for a free upgrade to WHOOP 4.0. We removed that blog article when it came to our attention and updated WHOOP Coach with the proper information. We’re sorry for any confusion this may have caused.

Thank you for your feedback. We remain committed to delivering the best technology, experience, and value to our community.

pretty disappointing as i just got the Whoop and have 9 months left and the only reason i purchased the product is because it was a benefit to receive the upgraded device as it was suspected that it would be out soon. It’s shouldn’t be on the customer because the information was wrong that was put out. it would make sense to honor all that purchased before the policy update than to extend favor to the 12 m+ members and not the 6 m+ as stated when purchasing. i made a purchase strongly on that benefit, now it seems like a got you. i know who will not be continuing membership… this disappointed customer… I wish you all the best however i can’t be a supporter of a company that changes on its policies without grandfathering in original promises.

There is no cost upgrade to 5.0, however it is fair to upgrade to life with 79-49, does team consider about the pricing policy? I think it is not compatible form 5.0 and mg?

How can i upgrade from whoop 4.0 to whoop mg version without paying anual billing? Or can i order the new device for free?

You can pay a one-time upgrade fee to receive the new hardware without any changes to your billing.

And then how much is the monthly subscription then? It remains same like in the previous whoop 4.0?

I love the way you got a reply straight away and then… silence. Like me - you have no idea.

Well my “one time upgrade fee” was £350!!! So… hence I am coming here to find out what the hell is going on because that is a con

I think the amount of disappointment and all the complaints around this cannot be because 1 person got it wrong. The only reason I purchased the product back in v3.0 was because it was a benefit to receive the upgraded device for the subscription price period..

WHOOP Life is $40 / month, so if you would like to upgrade to this plan and continue with your monthly payments you would pay the one-time upgrade fee to receive the new device and move to this monthly pricing.

I’ve just upgraded to the new whoop when going through the process they said my membership that I just purchased last month would go from 11 months to 8 months due to the price increase. When attempting to check out for the shipping of the new product I hit continue to see what my billing would be but it didn’t go to an additional page it just charged me for another year paying $391 without any confirmation. This was not was said when reading about when upgrading. I was charged again for another year after purchasing one not even a month prior and have yet to me contacted from the support team.

Reflects your values = we need to make as much money from loyal customers. Good one. Our expectations as loyal customers is that we expected that Whoop was different in that it was focused on the data and visualization and not the device. The reason I bought your subscription was that there was no need to worry about the hardware. What happened? This is a big poke in the eye from you so when the time comes that cancel costs me nothing. You will get the same from me. And no more talking up Whoop and recommending it from me. Enjoy your ‘values’. Pfft

Do you provide discounts to those working in the uk emergency services

“This was never our policy and should never have been posted.”.
But it was posted, and people signed up because of that post.

If you don’t want to honour what you had posted, I want a full refund as you’re not willing to fulfil what I had signed up for.

Am I wrong in remembering Whoop advertising we’d get a free upgrade to the next gen hardware when signing up a couple of years ago? I remember that being a major selling point.

This company is extrmely frustrating to work with. I had issues with my 4.0 throughout the year and the communication was horrible. Now they have upgraded to the 5.0 which as a member you were supposed to never have to pay for upgrades. On top of that, the extra chargers I have purchased for travel as well as the multiple packs of boxers that I have purchased are now useless with the 5.0 technology. I have not only invested in the service, but also hundereds of dollars in accessories and clothes to now be useless. Not to mention the 20+ people I have turned on and are now using the products. I am sure that I am not the only one and they will see a steep decline in membership. Even the CS person at apple yesterday saw my whoop and actually started complaining before I even had a chance to say anything.

Great idea, great product when it works, horrible customer service and brand loyalty.

Hmmm WHOOP, you’re ruining your integrity here. Here are my thoughts and why it’s frustrating for so many longtime users:

  1. WHOOP’s original promise was clear.

From the start, WHOOP said members would get the “latest and greatest” hardware at no extra cost. That wasn’t just implied — it was written in WHOOP’s own blog (April 2020):

“You get the latest and greatest technology as soon as it’s available as long as you are an active member. No need to buy a new device each time it is released; you can upgrade for free.” There is NO mention of a contingency nodding to how much time you have left on your subscription. This is a statement that Whoop is quietly sliding in to the messaging.

That set the tone for how members understood the value of the subscription.

  1. That same promise appeared later — and was taken down.

WHOOP’s website also stated that members would receive the next-generation device after six months. That page has since been removed, which only adds to the confusion and undermines trust. And yes, I understand that was acknowledged above… but you’re doing a lot of backpedaling there my friend.

  1. WHOOP 5.0 and MG are both next-gen hardware.

Yes, MG includes added features like ECG and blood pressure insights — but it’s still part of the next-gen rollout. It feels disingenuous to draw a line between 5.0 and MG just to create an upgrade fee when both are built on the same platform. Members were promised the latest hardware, not “some of it.”

  1. The $79 upgrade fee feels like a bait-and-switch.

Many of us signed up believing hardware was included with our membership. Quietly removing that language and now charging for upgrades — or requiring a 12-month extension — feels like WHOOP is shifting its model after the fact, and it doesn’t sit right.

So what’s next?

WHOOP has built something great, and the community is strong. But to keep trust, WHOOP needs to clearly reset expectations — or better yet, honor the ones it already set. Give members access to the next-gen hardware (5.0 or MG) the way it was originally promised

I agree. The company lost integrity. Your case is worse than mine as youve been around since v3. Wow
