Hello, because heartratezones are for running and cycling quite different you can set in Garmin different heartratezones for running and cycling. In whoop I just can set one. Today I had a cycle session (Garmin+Powermeter) in zone 2 . Whoop say it was just zone 1. Any suggestions?
Hi @Tyson81, great question. You can manually adjust your max HR and heart rate zone bounds in WHOOP. Here’s a quick article on it: More personalized Heart Rate Zones with the Heart Rate Reserve Method on WHOOP
The TL-DR: In the WHOOP app, tap “More” → “App Settings” → “Activity Settings” → “Heart Rate Settings”. You’ll then want to toggle on the “Manual Heart Rate Zones” toggle and manually input your zones.
You’ll know you’ve reached the right screen when you see the screen below (I’ve included an image before and after clicking on the toggle). When that green toggle is lit up, you’re able to edit the zones and click “Save HR Zones” to save them. If you have any issues, ping me back.
Got you thx mate. I’ve noticed that I can set the zone manually. But does it mean I have to change these fore every different workout between running and cycling?
For zone control I use my Garmin watch, don’t need whoop, but my concerns are that whoop calculate wrong strain score based on wrong or different Heartratezones from whoop.
Hey @Tyson81!
One thing to note is that WHOOP’s cardiovascular Strain calculation is based on your maximum heart rate (either estimated by WHOOP or manually set by you) and it doesn’t rely on heart rate zones. Instead, it analyzes your heart rate continuously throughout the workout, without dividing it into separate zones. So aside from your Max HR setting, any custom HR zones you enter won’t affect how Strain is calculated. Strain is a general measure of your cardiovascular output, independent of the activity you are doing. Hope this helps!
Thats sound great thx. So that means I don’t have to track activities on my whoop. It will has no impact of my daily strain, recovery etc. calculation?
I would still track activities. It will give you accurate time in heart rate zones and also allow you to look at accumulated totals over time for those activities. If Whoop doesn’t automatically detect and label your activities, you can select it after the fact and it will start to learn and pick them up automatically over time. If all you care about is overall strain then no you would not need to log your activities.
