Extreme inaccurate step count and calorie burn while working from standing desk/treadmill combo... is there a solution?

I joined Whoop yesterday after I was given one as a gift (someone in my life upgraded), so I figured, why not let’s try this. I walk 5-10 miles every single day on a treadmill while I work. This thing is not only off but EXTREMELY off. I mean, unreal. My treadmill sends my workouts to Apple Health, and on 2 miles, I’m easily taking 4,477 steps. This thing says I’m taking 546… lol. Whoop literally has the ability to read my Apple Health. Why would it not use that ability? Is there seriously no solution?

I would love to leave my Apple Watch behind, but this is honestly a complete deal breaker. This won’t give a true representation of my health or fitness if I can’t track my steps or true cal burn… Anyone able to help?

My Garmin and Whoop are very similar for steps but unless I am swinging my arms whilst walking I am not sure any tracker will work unless on my ankle or I have started a GPS exercise. Not that would help on a treadmill. I would assume a treadmill is always more accurate. But you should compare like for like, Whoop v Garmin v Fitbit on your wrist or try putting whoop on your ankle but think all other metric will be out. :thinking:

This is good feedback but my question is more about is there a solution to get Whoops software to pay attention to my data? My treadmill specifically does this integration. I was just so excited to leave behind my Apple Watch and now it appears I’m stuck with it lol

you did say you are on a treadmill whilst working. Which I assume means your hands are on a keyboard/mouse so not moving much.

I might try that. I love the idea of not needing to wear the Apple Watch anymore so I can enjoy my nicer watches and get some nice bands for the fitness tracker or throw on a pair of underwear to keep the tracking going :rofl:

And yes, I have a walking pad which updates apple health on cal burn, distance walked, and time walked. It’s pretty awesome.

Walking pad is cool but to expect whoop to monitor your steps whilst only your legs are moving and you are typing/moving a mouse seems unrealistic. I doubt your apple watch does much better than whoop. Whoop will work great for other things but walking whilst at a desk I pretty much doubt any device could compete with your Walking Pad. :slightly_smiling_face:

Oh, of course I didn’t expect that. I just thought during setup that Whoops app software would integrate. I granted Whoop access to my workout data in Apple Health. It had permission to read it but it sounds like they don’t care to use that integration. I thought it would be similar to Apple Watch, Apple Health, and the Fitness app or other fitness tracking apps I use (non-Apple). The hope really came down to the desire to have one app to track health and that would use smart data to achieve this. Similar to how Apple Watch will merge manual workouts on my treadmill with auto workouts on my watch. I don’t get double credit.

I’ll try wearing it elsewhere but their customer support team made it pretty clear it won’t work well unless it’s on my wrist. I have 2 months free to try. Hopefully when steps are out of beta they will integrate the read feature with Apple Health app. I see them doing a lot with Ai and that’s a perfect use case, “Oh, Patrick walked the same time in this workout going 6 miles that we tracked going 1 mile. Lets merge them in app” :crossed_fingers:

The way it works with my cycling activities is just like what you are seeing. I do a ride on my Garmin device and it’s logged to Apple Health, Whoop sees this as an activity and does it’s magic. But it doesn’t give me any real stats from the event. It uses it’s own HR, calculates it’s own calorie burn etc. There are no other stats like distance, power etc. It appears to me that it really only uses the Health data for start and end time of the activity so it can map to what stats to use from the whoop band. Since my distance, power & cadence are not consider from Apple Health then it would also seem logical that whoop will use the steps from the whoop band and not the health app steps.

As for the ankle, I agree it’s best to keep on your wrist for all other things but might capture your steps better on your ankle as an experiment.
